Woodcarving has long been used to bring depth, movement and ornament to furniture and architectural work. In this course, participants will be introduced to the rich tradition of decorative carving, focusing on classic English forms inspired by the natural world.

Working with traditional carving tools, students will learn how to shape timber into flowing foliage, exploring well-known motifs such as acanthus leaves and woodland-inspired designs. The course will guide participants through the process step by step, from understanding tool control and reading the grain to developing depth, form and rhythm within a carved surface.

Through hands-on practice, participants will gain confidence in creating expressive, sculptural detail, transforming flat timber into decorative work with character and movement.

Georgy Levan Metichian is a master carver specialising in historic woodcarving and restoration. His work draws on traditional techniques used in fine furniture and architectural ornament, and his teaching offers a rare opportunity to learn these skills from an experienced practitioner.

By the end of the course, participants will have completed their own piece to take away, with all materials provided and access to the Marketplace included as part of the experience.
