Rush seating is a traditional craft used for centuries to create strong, comfortable and visually distinctive seating. In this course, participants will build a simple wooden stool and learn how to weave a traditional rush seat using natural materials.

The course introduces the structure of rush-seated furniture and the process of weaving a seat that is both durable and well-formed. Participants will learn how to prepare the frame, handle natural rush and build up the seat through a structured weaving process.

Rachael South is a craft practitioner and teacher specialising in traditional upholstery and seating crafts. Her work focuses on preserving heritage techniques and making them accessible to new makers.

By the end of the course, participants will have completed their own piece to take away, with all materials provided and access to the Marketplace included as part of the experience.
